The Jazz Cafe Newcastle: 8th December 2015
I got the time wrong.
Thought it was nine,
But it was eight.
No one told me,
I was late.
Nevertheless,
The music was good,
I'd heard them before
Knew that I would,
Want to hear more,
Was it jazz?
Was it rock?
Was it fusion:?
Or was it just
A beautiful illusion?

The Jazz Coop at the Globe, Newcastle 23rd April 2015
With Russell, our roving reporter, covering the goings on down in deepest Darlo it was up to me to take stock of city centre happenings in Newcastle.
The "Toon" was buzzing. Hens were partying and, despite a seventh consecutive defeat, "The shirts" were smiling - possibly because Sunderland were now in the relegation zone. The 22 bus from Stand F was only 8 minutes late so I reached The Globe Jazz Bar just as the DB Project were firing up the nuclear reactors that power their sound system. You need decibels? DBP have them to spare!
Within the constraints of the compact Jazz Bar the sound was overwhelming - this was World War 23 set to music!
However, my ears gradually attuned themselves to the sound level (I live close to a Metro Line so they've had plenty practice) and I begun to appreciate the content more and more as the set evolved. Keighley knows his way around the horns - alto and soprano but mainly tenor - awesome technique with lots of harmonics used in conjunction with a variety of electronic effects. MacMillan did some wild thrashing on Strat - he too is not short on ability when it comes to navigating the fretboard - Sander, on fretless, adopted a less frenetic approach producing some melodic lines that ensured a degree of sanity prevailed whilst co-leader Grant held it all together.
The material included originals by Keighley - Spanish Ballerina particularly endearing - alongside something from Nirvana, Coltrane's A Love Supreme, Little Sunflower and an outré take on Bowie's Space Odyssey among others.  
It was an exhilarating experience but I had other cats to swing so I reluctantly took my leave.

The Jazz Cafe Newcastle, 17th January 2015
After watching the film Whiplash I was on a high and I wasn't sure if I wanted anything to temper my mood. However, it was mid evening and the Jazz Café but a brisk short walk away, so I strode purposefully forth arriving just in time for the DB Jazz Project's first set.
I wasn't disappointed indeed if Whiplash hadn't been big band orientated this quartet could have provided the soundtrack!
A mixed program of originals, jazz standards (Midnight Voyage, A Love Supreme, All Blues and My Favourite Things) and pop/rock classics (Space Odyssey, Message in a Bottle, something by Iron Maiden) made for an enjoyable evening.
Keighley certainly knows his way around alto, tenor and soprano displaying an enviable technique as well as displaying his emotional side on Pure Imagination from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
MacMillan produced some stratospheric sounds from guitar and pedals, Sanders was sound and Grant didn't get any chairs thrown at him!
Catch them again, they're quite ubiquitous!

The DB Jazz Project with Mojoroller at the Bridge Hotel, 20th Febraury 2015

The jazz set. The DB Jazz Project, a quartet (three quarters round-the-block vets, one quarter new kid on the block) formed by Dave Keighley and Ben Grant (Dave and Ben, the D and B of DB fame), explored a Hawkwind to Hilliards sound world by way of Brit Pop Strat riffs. Most of the tunes originals (Funky Tune, Angel, Take the L Train) and none the worse for it, Keighley’s enhanced saxophonics (tenor, alto and soprano) reverberated around the upstairs room of the Bridge Hotel. Adrian Sander’s hypnotic bass lines freed MacMillan’s Strat to scratch and scat, and, occasionally, dazzle, fusion-style. Little Flower (one of few covers) impressed, MacMillan’s Puppeteering certainly impressed (Keighley, soprano) and the DB Jazz Project continues to develop.

It was good to see a crowded room of predominantly young people for this launching of DB Jazz Project - a new band albeit one with a few gigs under its belt already.
No shortage of technique amongst the quartet - enhanced (or otherwise) as it was by a distracting screen projection and some electronic sorcery - Keighley can certainly blow tenor and MacMillan knows his way around the fretboard. Likewise drums and bass put the boot in making for an explosive start. The influences were many and the material varied. Coltrane, Brecker - even Snake Davis - all provided the ammunition either directly or by suggestion.
The delays used on Isabel made for a cosmical sound (the 's' is optional) that took us to a far off land where few jazz orientated bands return from. The sound was as kaleidoscopical as the changing patterns on the screen and I was tempted to check the parking lot for a UFO berthed alongside a Honda Jazz 1.4.
Karma (Calmer?) Blue brought us back down to earth. A quirky, yet logical, head made this the most accessible number so far and, at this point, I unfortunately had to leave.
My intention was to catch the last set by The Collective at Hoochie but, it was cold and drizzling and the 27 bus was approaching so valour gave way to discretion and I took an early bath.
Apologies to both bands but deffo check out the DBJP at a venue near you - you won't regret it.
